Monsoon Season

2011

A decent chase season which included a funnel cloud over Perris, CA on September 13

July 3, 2011 - Indio, CA

I attempted a night chase in the Indio area as outflow boundaries from severe thunderstorms in western Arizona moved west into southeast Califronia and setup conditions for potential convection. Unfortunately they did not materialize, and I abandoned the chase around 10pm.

July 4, 2011 - Devore, CA

Strong easterly monsoon surge kicked off strong thunderstorms across the deserts and mountains of Southern California. Storms were spilling off the western San Bernardino Mtns into the Devore area. Storms did not go severe.

July 6, 2011 - Victorville, CA

Severe thunderstorm in the northern Victorville vicinity had weakened after getting a late start. Met up with local chasers Bill and Anna Stromberg, and Scott O'Donnell along Stoddard Wells Rd to observe the dying storm.

July 30, 2011 - Victorville/Adelanto, CA

Severe thunderstorms between Victorville and Barstow. Intercepted storm along I-15 nosth of Victorville. Looped west to Kramer Jct and south along US 395 to intercept another severe thunderstorm moving north into Adelanto.

July 31, 2011 - Phelen, CA

Fairly non-eventful chase. What started out as a strong thunderstorm in the Phelan area dissipated by the time I arrived. Further towering struggled as mid-level shear was too strong.

August 13, 2011 - Mojave Desert, CA

Strong thunderstorms in and around the town of Baker. Nothing severe, just some nice structure and sunset shots. Description released soon.

August 26, 2011 - Hemet, CA

Strong thunderstorm southeast of Hemet. I got as close as I could on the southeast side of Hemet before my data signal was lost. Not much to see except for some interesting base structure.

August 28, 2011 - Beaumont/Cabazon, CA

Decent severe thunderstorm over Banning and Cabazon. By the time I reached Cabazon the storm had weakened and moved north-northeast into the mountains.

September 5, 2011 - Hemet, CA

Not much to this chase day. Remnant MCS moving up from Baja created a huge rain shield type scenario with embedded thunderstorms. Attempted to stage in Hemet as that area was producing lightning, but not much was expereinced.

September 10, 2011 - Antelope Valley, CA

Severe thunderstorms pounded the Antelope Valley, CA area around Pearblossom, Palmdale, and Lake Los Angeles with flash flooding and large hail. Initially staged in Apple Valley around noon as early storms showed promising development. However, the area farther west from Pearblossom north to Lake Los Angeles and west to Palmdale/Lancaster became an active boundary with severe thunderstorms. Hail as large as 2.5" was being indicated with most hail falling to the surface as high as 1.5". Hail depths in Lake Los Angeles was as much as 4" in some areas.

September 13, 2011 - Perris, CA

The last chase of the 2011 monsoon season. 5:00pm. Severe thunderstorm over Perris which I intercepted about 3:30pm, and produced a funnel cloud on the south side of the storm directly over the downtown district around 3:38pm.
