CHASE ARCHIVES

Great Plains 2010

Two chase trips this season. First one spent 3 days (May 15-17) in west Texas ending up in Artesia, NM on the last day during a marginal tornado setup. Unfortunately no tornadoes any of those days and the best day was May 17 in se NM with numerous supercells in the Artesia/Carlsbad area. Second trip was June 25-27 with chaseable days each day, including two tornadoes on June 25 near Thedford, NE.

May 16, 2010 - Western Texas

Chasing with Andy Gabrielson. Attempted the area around Fort Stockton in mid-afternoon with a couple of severe storms. Relocated north of Odessa near Seminole as evening supercells initiated. No tornadoes.

May 17, 2010 - Southeast New Mexico

Moderate Risk for severe thunderstorms in southeast New Mexico. Targeted the Artesia area as a severe storm in Roswell moved southeast towards Artesia. This storm was also targeted by the Vortex-2 team which received severe damage to vehicles from baseball-sized hail including one of the DOWs between Roswell and Artesia. Fortunately this hail did not reach my location in Artesia. Other severe storms were in the area near Carlsbad. Some rotation but no tornadoes. Last storm of chase devolped into a gorgeous lp supercell with spectacular structure, rotation, and cloud-ground lightning.

June 25, 2010 - Stapleton/Thedford, NE

Stationary cold front over central Nebraska triggered isolated stationary storm development north of North Platte. Storms produced about a half dozen weak tornadoes between Stapleton and Thedford. I was able to spot two tornadoes. Western-most storm morphed into a non-tornadic LP supercell right before sunset. Storm died at sunset.

June 26, 2010 - Northeastern Nebraska

Moderate risk covered central and northeastern Nebraska as well as southeastern South Dakota. Targeted the area around Oneill, NE until initiation. Intercepted severe storm over Neligh that produced a wall cloud but accellerating cold front undercut the storm and killed any potential tornado development.

June 27, 2010 - Northern Oklahoma

Chased along the I-35 corridor area between Perry and Blackwell. Intercepted two severe thunderstorms near Tonkawa and Covington. Wall cloud and brief nub funnel on the Covington cell. No tornado warnings issued. Ended the day with an evening MCS between Guthrie and OKC.
